Marjaisat maltaat

Jouluostosrynnäkön keskellä tulee välillä tarve hengähdys- ja pohdintatauolle, ja mikäpä olisi sellaiseksi parempi kuin maltillinen mallashetki. Kitty's Public House sijaitsi tälläkin kertaa sopivasti matkan varrella, ja mikäpä sinne marssiessa kun paikka on keskeisestä sijainnistaan huolimatta verrattain hiljainen (yleensä) sekä henkilökuntakin asiantuntevaa ja suhteellisen kiireetöntä.

Meantime Cranberry Stout : hana : 0,5 l : 4,5 %
Vetisehkö perusstout pikaiseen katoavalla headilla ja katkerahkolla, mehuisella jälkimaulla. Niksibisse, joka häviää omassa lajissaan esimerkiksi kotimaiselle Puolukka Stoutille heittämällä.

Liefmans Cuvee Brut : pullo : 0,375 l : 6 %
Jännempi. Tuhdissa ja inan hiivaisessa maussa leikkivät liskot, hämähäkit sekä seinillä tanssivat muumit sulassa, suloisessa sovussa keskenään. Punainen, tumma, samea. Inainen kirsikka sekä yhdistää kriekkiin että siitä erottaa, sillä tämähän on tyypiltään oud bruin vaikka kirsikkaolut onkin.

Brewdog & Three Floyds - Bitch Please

Pullo : 0,33 l : 11,5 %

Pikaisella, ähkyisellä jälkiruokatuoppikeikalla Kitty'siin meinasi tulla tiskillä hörptästic block: en tiennyt mitä ottaisin. Asiantunteva kaljapygmi kuitenkin lujasti mutta varmasti opasti Brewdogin puoleen. Viimeistään nimen kuultuani olin myyty, ja niin oli juomakin.

Ensipurasun jälkeinen ilme oli mallia: O_O, koska olut maistuikin viskiltä! Tulipa tämän koiran päällimmäinen koukku selväksi jo ennen nielaisua...

Ei mut niQ oikeesti, islayltä (=savulta, turpeelta ja alkoholilta) maistuvaa barley wineä. Makeaa ja vahvaa; pikkusen on eksynyttä hedelmääkin maussa. Jännä.

Little Valley Withens Pale Ale

Hops, I has them!

Pullo : 3,9 % : 0,5 l

Nosturilla esiintynyttä, färsaarelaista Tyr-yhtyettä edeltävää lämmittelijäorkesteria vältellessämme poikkesimme läheiseen formaatti-hemppaan rohkaisemaan sydämiämme maukkaalla maltaalla. Kanssaolustelija tarttui vankkaan ja vakaaseen Beamishiin, mutta omaan kämmeneeni hakeutui lätäkön toispuolelta lähtenyt Withens: kirpakka, hapokas sekä mainio ja maukas.

Voimavirtapitoisuuttaan suurempi luomujuoma.

Peroni Nastro Azzurro

Pullo : 0,33 : 5,1 %

Rapden herkistämässä mielentilassa jouduin valintojen eteen kesken junamatkan: ostaako Pendolinon italialaisteemaisesta ruoanlämmityskioskista ylihintaista suomilageria, ylihintaista tsekkidunkelia vaiko ylihintaista italokirkasta.

Päädyin jälkimmäiseen, vaikkakin allekirjoittaneen ennakkoluuloisessa ajukopassa Italiasta ei tule kerrassaan mitään hyvää, paitsi makkara ja kauan odotettu Eros Ramazzottin kuolema (lopulta). Kun ei mitään odota niin ei paljoa pety; muun muassa muuan Avatar-elokuva käytiin katsomassa tällä ajatuksella ja lopputuloksena oli lähes uskonnollinen kokemus.

Siispä Pendolinon kallistelevassa kyydissä ryhdyin urheasti hörsimään spagetti-oltta, ja yllätyin positiivisesti: tämähän maistuu joltain. Happoisaa ja helppoa juoma on, joskin sivustasta hiipivä hunajainen sivumaku ei mietoudestaan huolimatta miellyttäne jokaista.

Ihan hyvä kertamaisto, siis.

Brewdog There's No Santa : pullo : 0,33 l : 4,7 %
Skottipanimolle tyypilliseen tyyliin tämäkin olut on vedetty sopivasti yli; maultaan lähempänä piparitaikinaa kuin perinteisempiä jouluoluita. Kuriositeetti, joskin erinomainen sellainen.

Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout : pullo : 0,355 l : 10 %
Hurjan tuhti ja makea tuoksu joka ei lainkaan taltu maistaessa. Alkoholi tuntuu läpi vähintään talvioluelle vaadittavan määrän, joskaan ei liikaa.
Lakua & mausteita menee koko huikan lävitse kitalaesta masuun.

Ehdotan nautittavaksi miinusasteista saapuessa.

Rotterdam-piipahde

Samuel Smith's Organic Cider, pullo : 0,55 l : 5 %
Tuoksu viinimäinen, maku mehuisa ja maltillisen hapokas. Puolikuivaa; ei hyvää, ei huonoa.

Brewdog Zeitgeist, hana : 0,5 l : 4,9 %
Viipyilevä hedi, hurjan paahteinen tuoksu ja maku. Katkeraa kuin elämä, hiiltynyttä myös. Ota iso tuoppi, mikäli päiväsi siihen mennessä on ollut ylen iloisa ja aurinkoinen.

Bintang Pilsener

Pullo : 0,33 l : 4,7 %

Huh! Melkoisen hapokas ruokajuoma, johon törmäsin Forumin Tamarinissa. Indonesialainen pilsner kuulostaa hitusen oudolta, mutta olut eittämättä on tunnistettavissa lajityyppinsä edustajaksi, maltillisesta humaloinnista huolimatta. Sopii hyvin semitulisen ruumiinravinnon kyytipojaksi veden oheen.

Eväänä toimi tällä kertaa som tam -papaijasalaatti ja sataykanavartaat, jotka tuomittiin mainioiksi, joskaan ei täydellisiksi.

Kaksi germaania: Carolus "Der Starke" Doppelbock & Köstritzer Schwarzbier

The German (DMW) brought me these two impressive, genuine German lagers as I paid his phone bill.

He also forced me blog about them - instead of just quaffing them down with a hearty laughter and some unintelligible shouting as German lagers should be enjoyed - so i will. Unfortunately he didn't mention in which language i should make the entry, joten kirjoitan sen suomeksi. Oppiipahan, hähä.

Binding-brauerei Carolus Doppelbock, pullo : 0,5 l : 7,5 %

Arvottuani kahden välillä hetkisen houkutuin muiden lokkien, varisten ja vastaavien haaskalintujen tapaan kiiltävästä ja päädyin testaamaan Caroluksen ensimmäiseksi. Tämä saattoi olla virhe, sillä kaadettuani merimieskahvinvärisen (l. pikimustan) nesteen tuoppiin ja höräistyäni tuhdista vaahdosta ylimääräiset veke ja myöhemmin toivuttuani vasta tajusin tarkemmin tsekata etikettiä. Jep: doppelbockiahan se - 7,5 % tehollista yksikköä, ja se myös maistuu. Melkomoisen lämmittävän etanoliannoksen jälkeen, tai ehkä samaan aikaan, karkaa makuhermojen päälle tuikea makeus ja mallas, jonka jälkeen em. hermojen raunioita hivelee rauhoittavasti yllättävän hento, jopa yrttimäinen jälkimaku. 

Final verdict: strong, sweet and even a bit herbal and warming lager. Would quaff another.

Köstritzer Schwarzbier, pullo : 0,5 l : 4,8 %

Kuten ounastelinkin, osoittautui germaanien nautintajärjestys täysin vääräksi. Tuhdin ja makean doppelbockin jälkeen schwarzbier maistui aluksi hennohkolta, jopa ohuelta. Oluen pikkuhiljaa lämmetessä ja makuhermoston kerättyä itseään löytyi Köstritzeristä kuitenkin aivan omanlaisensa maku. Toisin kuin (näemmä) tummat lagerit yleensä, ei schwarzbier ilmeisesti ole makea. Jos johonkin tutumpaan tulisi verrata, niin tämä on kuin paahtamaton (ja tietysti lager-) versio irlantilaisista stouteista.

Makua on siis melko maltilla, mutta mikäpä tätä siemaillessa.

Final verdict: initially completely shadowed by the previous doppelbock, the "blackbeer" turned out to be a fine-tasting dryish beer. Very easy to drink, and not in the bad sense of the term.

Final baby of the block of 3 presented to me by my brother.
This coldbrewed beauty surprises with an interesting color of light brown.. actually the first brownbeer I know that actually IS brown... the dark amber color reminds me of thin Cola. The foamy head builds up very full at first, dissipates very fast though. I chose to drink this from a Radeberger Pils Glas as it was size wise the closest glas I had. I do, however, think that the glas was a good choice for it. Olfactory the beer has not very much to offer. It has a weak flowery sweet smell that I would expect from a bock, only to a lesser degree.
The taste surprised me. First I thought it's too watery, till it exploded with metallic, spicy nuances. The carbonation is just about right if not a TAD bit too much for my taste but that's seriously just a small side note. It IS a really, really interesting beer when it comes to taste as it combines fine hoppish notes with a crisp bitterness that I normally dislike, however, in this beer it just works as a compund piece of tasted art. I like the almost almondy aftertaste mixed with the bitterness which lingers in ones mouth just long enough to be good and not long enough to be a nuisance. Makes me sad that these smaller breweries are not known further that their home places normally... I really can see me drinking more of this. The exact right amount of bitterness makes it a real surprise for me. YAY for another rare find.

Ulmer Gold Ochsen Kellerbier

Part 2 of my brothers recent delivery of 3 bottles to me. He sure knows my love for Kellerbier and thus brought me this from his trips to the surroundings of Ulm where the beer is brewed by the brewery Gold Ochsen. The foamy head goodness of the beer persists very long and doesn't dissipate fully. It is rich golden in color and not as cloudy (aka unfiltered) as I usually like em but it is interesting enough. I can see the contours of my fingers through it but that's about all. Scent wise this offers a wide bouquet of flowery tones mixed with some sweet yeast parts. The glas I am drinking it from is something very dear for me... my aunt gave it to me and it has been handmade a long while ago as the brewery advertisement that's on it depicts a brewery that hasn't been open for decades. My aunt used to use it as a vase... grunt.. but back to the beer. The freshness of the smell is making my mouth water and it does smell good... Taaaaaaaaaaste tiiime. Mhh a rare gem indeed! Thre is a surprise bitterness tone in it way back on my palate but it dissipates almost instantly, making place for very rich spicy and mouth watering happiness. Another Kellerbier that is absolutely making me happy. I really, really love these surprises that one can find somewhere around the corner. The aftertaste is really good, slightly malty but of the good not the burnt variety and all in all the best beer I have had for weeks. Thanks Frank!

Grimbergen Double & Stadin Panimo Ultimator

Grimbergen: hana : 0,4 l : 6,5 %

Kärsiinnyttävän Anttila-keikan jälkeen poikkesimme uudistuneeseen Ravintola Viiteen Penniin piipahtamaan yksillä. Siispä jo toisen tuopin täytin belgialaisella dubbelilla, jota en ollutkaan nähnyt muualla lainkaan, saati sitten hanassa. Tarjoiltiin kauniissa jalallisessa lasissa, jossa pikimustan soosin ja kauniin valkoisen vaahdon kontrasti oikein korostui. Hedi hiipui kohtalaisen vikkelään, mutta kuta muka oikeasti kiinnosted.

On a side note: 5P:ssä on Helsingin Parhaat Laukkaleivät (tosin itse nimittävät niitä kerettiläisesti "Rapeiksi Leipätikuiksi")

Maku on .. ennakkoluulostani täysin poikkeava. Odotin alkoholilta ja hiivalta sekä banskulta maistaavaa perusbelggiä, mutta neste maistuu lähinnä kirsikattomalta, makealta kriekiltä. Marjaisalta tai jotain sellaista; taidan hakea toisen!



Ultimator: pullo : 0,33 : 8 %

...no enpä hakenutkaan vaan päätin suomia ulkolaista; parisen vuotta sitten visullisesti ja pullolinjastollisesti virkistäytyneen Stadin Panimon "töhöhö, etpäs uskalla juoda!" -olut Ultimator tarttui kämmeneen. Kirjaimellisesti, koska etiketti oli syystä tai toisesta inan tahmea.

Päättelin sekä etanolin että ibun määrästä ja etiketissä mainitusta käpyhumalasta saaneeni kiukkuista paleata aleata, mutta tyyppi olikin tiukka dobbelbock! Mallasta hirmusti, humalaa ei juurikaan (niinku oikeesti). Maukasta, makeaa, hapanta vaan ei happoista.

Mikäs siinä - etenkin jos tykkää!

Original N° 1 Museumsbier

Surprise package delivered by my brother who surprised me with 3 beauties of unknown quality which herewith are about to be tasted. Colorwise this naturally cloudy - as unfiltered - beer is a pale yellow a bit fanta-ish. The full white foam dissipates slowly but leaves a nice white layer. The beer stems from a small brewery and is labeled as the museumbeer of the beerstein museum.
The odor is mediocre and holds a lot of citrus aroma coupled with the expected yeast. It also smells as if it will have a high carbonation .. we shall see. Its fruity yeast smell is interesting and I can't judge whether I like it or not. Time to taste!
Carbonation isn't as high as I expected, actually it's about perfect. The taste is a bit waterish but very tasty in the aftermath. It holds a nice malty side tone which is an interesting addition to the slight citrus and spice tones. An unfiltered beauty made not for everyone but I like it. I'm a huge fan of unfiltered beers and this fills my expectations. Kudos to my brother for introducing this interesting baby to me.

Brouwerij De Ranke: Saison De Dottignies

Puuduttamatta kestetyn hammaslääkärikeikan jälkeen päätin palkita itseni parilla jalojuomalla, ja lähipitkäripaisessa vietetyn arvontahetken jälkeen päädyin tähän belgialaiseen saisoniin.

Alkon hintalappu lupaili kukkaista ja ketterästi humaloitua hörsittävää, ja sitä tämä todella on: tuoksussa ei tunnu humle juurikaan, mutta maussa mukavaa kitkeryyttä löytyy.

Väriltään tämä otus on kellervä ja samea, tuhdilla joskin yllättävän pikaisehkosti pakenevalla headilla.

Maussa korostuu, tai oikeastaan löytyy, lähinnä humala. Hyvää, tullen ostamaan toistekin.

Dark amber with a distinct reddish tone, this fine trappiste is the last of my batch I brought from belgium on my last visit.. what better do drink outside on the terrace in nice warm temperatures. The sun is playing with the colors and the foamy head persists and doesn't fade... something I always like. I haven't poured in the last batch with the yeast yet, which explains why it's rather clear so far.
Smellwise this offers surprisingly sweet almost berry tones with nice citrus hints. I can't smell the banana I would have expected. It's really not smelling like any beer I have smelled before... maybe it's the outside air affecting it though. Anyways.. time to taste the beauty.. The carbonation again is a bit too heavy for me and the nice fruity smell I smelled can barely be found in the taste. Bitter tones are overlapping most other aspects though there is a sour side in it which might or might not stem from the carbonation. Adding the yeast... colorwise the yeast gives this beer an almost orange color, fading into watery coffee. The bitterness is mellowed by the fine yeast tones and it leaves a nice aftertaste... another beer I prefer with the yeast mixed into it. A fine trappiste I learned to love, however not a Rochefort.. I think I might prefer it over a Westmalle though.

Duvel Moortgat Brewery

Brewed by Duvel under their abbey beers line and labeled as 'In the tradition of the Benedictines', this triple has a nice amber red color. The yellowish foam leaves a full head and pleases me aesthetically (please note that the glas I took it in was a Corsendonk glas and not the fitting Maredsous). It smells fresh and sweet. The usual banana scent is existing though it mixes with faint yeast and orange tones. Let's see ... or rather taste... whether this product from a large brewery can live up to the Trappistes I love so much.
I'm not a huge fan of the carbonation.. it's on the verge of hurting my tongue if I leave a sip too long in my mouth. The fruity tones blend in nicely with a crisp bitterness, alas I'm not a huge fan of the bitter tones but I can see why people like it. It actually reminds me a bit of blood orange .. whyever. I can taste the yeast which is nice (I like some yeasty tones, even though I dislike wheat beers nowadays) but overall the general tastyness of this tripel could be stronger. It disguises the alcohol content nicely though, which is a nice feature in a strong beer. It's a fine beer to taste, can't cope with my beloved Trappistes though. But taste is ... of course ... subjective. Prost!

Veltins Pilsener

In a 'back to the roots' movement I decided to go for my former favorite beer when I was just beginning to consume this golden beverage out of which dreams are made and nightmares spun. According to Wikipedia Veltins Pilsener is the number 7 in the top selling breweries in Germany. The bottle is nice and branded with the brewery name within the glas, something that's not that common in Germany since most beer bottles are made in the same way so they can be interchangeable between the breweries. After a nice and full foam head, a small layer remains. Filtered and absolutely clear the color has a classical golden shine. Smell is is very fresh and fruity .. actually it makes my mouth water so time to taste it...:)
A tad bit watery the taste opens after a second or two. The distinct bitter and slightly yeasty taste comes in the aftertaste. Luckily not too bitter, it holds a nice balance between hops and the spicy side notes. I do remember why I used to like it... still I prefer my unfiltered Kellerbier but its definitely a good Pilsener, even though or maybe because it is produced by a big brewery.

Westmalle Trappist Tripel

Distinct sweet, strong smell that all Tripels share. Rich fruity, banana ish with a hint of honey.
Foam stays nice and long and adds to the pleasure of looking at this beer. I purchased the matching glas at Brussels airport where I was working for a day in an exchange program. It's slightly cloudy at this point, will, however, get even more so, once the yeast is poured into it. Many people are fighting about whether the yeast belongs into it or not.... I personally drink half of it without and then pour the yeast in for an additional flavor experience. Taste without the yeast poured is nicely sweet bitter with some hints of liquorice in the aftertaste. Not as sweet as I expected from the smell and a bit more bitter than I remember it to be. Carbonation is just perfect. It tickles the tongue and vanishes quickly.

Color changes to an almost Fanta-ish yellow while the yeastiebeasties are swirling around.
The yeast mellows the taste and the bitterness and in my opinion should be added in the beginning, alas, it is up to the personal taste. All in all one of the best Trappistes.. though the Rochefort might win over it.

Paulaner Oktoberfest 2011

Brewdogista jäi niin kiukkuinen humala maistumaan suuhun että päätin huuhtoa sen alas kampanjahanatuotteella.

Kullankeltainen ja maukas peruslager Paulanerilta valikoitui tällä kertaa palan painikkeeksi. Hohtavan valkoinen vaahto hävisi melko nopeasti Oktoberfest-spesialistobeen sijoitetun oluen pinnalta.

Olut on siis perusluikeroa tuhdimpi maultaan, muttei herätä peruslaadukkuutta lukuunottamatta sen ihmeempiä tunteita. Maukkaus peittää helposti alleen kuuden tehollisen voltin etanolipitoisuuden: tätä olisi peloittavan helppoa hörsiä kohtalokkaan monta litraista tuoppia. Ei huano.

Brewdog Alpha Dog (existential red ale)

Sattui niin sopivasti kohdalle kaatosade, että oli suorastaan pakko poiketa Kampin Rotterdamiin. Aikani varvisteltuani tiskillä, silmämunitellen pullovalikoimaa Saksa-schlagerien sulosointujen raastaessa korvalumpioitani, päädyin valitsemaan neljän Brewdog-oluen valikoimasta otsikon ohrajuoman.

Ammattiylpeän baarimikon kaadettua oluen pulloon (ja suotua allekirjoittaneen ottaa kuvan oluesta ja peukalostaan), havainnoin vaahdon lähes loistavan poissaolollaan ja nesteen punervan sameaksi.

Maku säväytti alkuun pirteällä, jopa kiukkuisella hapokkuudellaan ja katkerankitkerällä humalallaan. Humalointi on tosiaan reipasta muttei trendikkään hedelmäistä - harmin paikka; pidän pihkaisesta humalasta.

Maltaisuus tuntuu korkeintaan etäisenä häivähdyksenä jälkimaussa.

Very light yellow orange clear look, foam dissipates very fast but leaves a fine layer.
Very sweet spicy smell, not bitter and pilsner like like I expected.
Also sweetish taste, maybe a bit too watery. Very faint roasted malt aroma which is a slight turnoff for me.
Nevertheless a very clean and refreshing taste even though I didn't drink this one chilled.
It is a very honest and crisp taste and I can see this as a very nice alternative to a tasteless Lager or a bitter Pilsner.

Burger & Bun: L. A. Lager (0,33L & 5%)

Hampurilainen ja olut on yhdistelmä joka ei kuulosta järin herkulliselta ensikuulemalta. Ei edes silloin, kun olut on Mikkellerin panema ja burgereiden laadusta ei ole mitään tietoa. Toki tanskanmaalla on ollut tapana syödä kaikenlaista perin outoa, joten oluen ja hampurilaisten yhdistelmä sopii siihen perinteeseen hyvin.

Belgiassa pantu tanskalainen, varsin villisti humaloitu olut muistuttaa vahvasti erästä toista pohjoismaalaista Intian tuliaista. Internetin ihmemaailma osaa kertoa, että tuotteesta löytyy Columbusta, Nelson Sauvinia, Centennialia, Simcoeta ja Amarilloa. Siis melkoinen sekoitus, ja hyvin löytyy katkeruuttakin. Kaadettaessa olut näyttäytyy punertavana ja hieman sameana, ja vaahdostakin muodostuu yllättävän kuohkea. Ensipuraisu tuntuu kitalaessa ja kestää pitkään. Hedelmäinen tuoksu ja maku ovat hyvin esillä, ehkä taustalla on hieman greipinmakua. Tämä lager olisi sopinut menneen kesän helteisiin poikkeuksellisen hyvin, sen verran raikasta menoa tämä on.

Ja vaikka tämä(kin) Mikkellerin luomus on erinomainen, en silti pilaisi tätä hampurilaisella. Enkä muullakaan. Parhaillaan tällaiset juomat ovat sellaisenaan.

Colorwise a pale gold and not as orange as I would have expected. The foam dissipates very fast, alas a thin foam layer persists. Very fruity, fresh appetizing smell. Tastewise this came to me as an absolute surprise. I was expecting a bitter Pilsnertaste but instead I was surprised by the fresh, full taste. It has nice spicy side tones but keeps the distinct beer taste. I can only guess how purrfect an unfiltered version of this would be. Surely one of the best beers I have had in a long while. The spicyness has a nice contrast with soft citrus notes which is an interesting sensation. The carbonation is just right, it tickles the tongue without hurting it. Half pint gone.. still sone fine foam left... yay! Sadly or funnily enough having found this made my day today. Seems like a rare gem that I just picked up cause I liked the lable and thought it to be a nice addition to my collection. Wells Bowman Stout

Alkon valikoimiin on ilmestynyt uusi stout: Wells Bowman Stout. Pullossa on mukavan näköinen etiketti ja pullon muoto on jostain syystä tuttu. Takaetiketin lähempi tarkastelu kertoo, että olutta panemassa on ollut Wells & Young panimo, jonka oluista ainakin Young's Double Chocolate Stout on jo vanha tuttu. Nopea googlaus paljastaa että Young ja Wells yhdistyivät vuonna jo 2006.

Kaadettaessa olut kuohuu vaivalloisesti, vaahto häviää myös hyvin nopeasti ja lasissa on jäljellä enää vain hyvin synkkää olutta. Tuoksussa hieman paahteisuutta, lakritsia ja kahvia. Suussa maistuu kahvimaisuus ja kuiva paahteisuus. Hieman mitäänsanomaton ensivaikutelma, mikä kokemusten perusteella vaivaa isoa osaa brittistoutteja. Maku ei myöskään parane oluen vähentyessä. Tätä tuskin tarvitsee ostaa toista kertaa.

Tuopin pohjan lähestyessä tämä olut ei kerta kaikkiaan tarjoa mitään erikoista. Tässä ei yksinkertaisesti ole yhtään mieleen painuvaa yksityiskohtaa. Ja jos jotain positiivista pitäisi löytää, niin etiketti on ihan mukavan oloinen. Matala alkoholipitoisuus ja liiallinen hapokkuus eivät vaan ole hyvä yhdistelmä tällaisessa oluessa.

Braunbier is the designation for a mildly hopped, beer made with malt out of barley. It's an old designator stemming back to the days of a very strict German Beer Purity law from 1516.

This particular beer used to also be called Red Beer because of its color... and indeed it surprises with a deep red brown color. The foam holds nicely and never fully dissipates, leaving a nice layer of creme colored bubbles on top.This bottom fermented beauty smells of fresh bread and almost like a bock with its sweet, deep tones. The smoky bitterness is maybe the strongest taste factor that comes to mind. I'm sure it's the right beer to a slice of freshly baked bread with a hearty cheese, alas for me at this moment it isn't fitting my summer mood. It tries to be as heavy as a bock, can't cope with its 5,4% alcohol, however, and tastes a bit watery for me. It has a ryeish aftertaste that stays in the nose and on the palate that I don't really fancy... alas it was to be expected from this kind of beer and I wanted to taste it to blog about it. It's interesting how much ones taste changes over the years, as I used to be really fond of these dark beers when I was younger. Even after half the mug gone, the thin layer of foam persists which is something that I do find very aesthetically pleasing. I also am very fond of the color. The sun shines through it and shows the full color of thin coffee with a more reddish hue. It's something I would definitely chose for a big dinner in medieval setback.... a full beer nicely fitting Olde Hansa in TLL for example, alas nothing I prolly will buy again besides as a novelty... or for my fellow co-bloggers to try.

All in all I'm not a fan of the roasted malty aftertaste but it's definitely nice for a change and to try.

Schmucker Double

1. Schmucker Rosé Bock

The label implies the color... alas the pinkish color I had in mind from the last Kriek I drank wasn't what I got. It has a amberish, slightly reddish hue; produces a nice foam which sadly disperses way too fast. The smell is surprisingly fresh and fruity with a hint of marzipan, not as heavy as I'm used to from other Bock.
It's clear, thus definitely filtered and - like almost all beers in Germany - brewed according to the German Purity Law – the Reinheitsgebot. Tastewise it's a nice fine Bock, not too heavy like they usually are. It reminds me of a weaker tasting cousin of the Trappistes I like so much. Interestingly it gives a nice extra aftertaste on the back of the tongue and the palate. It's mildly carbonated; a bit more would be nice to make it a bit more fruity. All in all it is a nice Bock and I like the idea to make it a bit brighter in color. Bitterness is nicely blended in with the other taste notes of flowers and fruits. I do like the idea of a bit lighter Bock. And this could easily become my favorit Bock for now. The alcohol content is noticeable though.

Sadly the picture can't show the red hues it has.

I guess I am still a bit prejudiced towards the brewery.. even though a friends mother once worked there and almost every of our parties was sponsored by her free beer. :)

2. Schmucker Odenwälder Ur-Stoff

Landbier

Color is less attractive than my normal favorite cloudy beers... tbh it reminded me more of some visit to the doctors and a lil plastic cup... but äh away from that... a bit like a red hued light yeast beer.
No distinct smell besides some vague citrus notes. Foam dissipates fast again. Taste also is rather bland with high carbonation thats almost hurting the tip of my tongue. The slightly bitter aftertaste isn't really my thing either. I'd prefer this over a bland finnish Lager every day, alas it can't really compete with my all time favorite Schlappeseppel. I almost think that Schmucker tried to ride the wave of unfiltered Kellerbier but then decided to make it bland enough to hit the general taste. It's absolutely drinkable and seriously not bad but all in all not very spectacular. Another Schmucker.... :)

Germano-English Invasion

What better start for an English entry than an English beer...

This Ale (sometimes also called a Bitter) is definitely one of my favorites. As I do not share the enthusiasm of my fellow writers when it comes to IPA or Ale in general, I was a tad bit scepitcal when a coworker brought me this beauty from the UK. I was wrong, however. The taste is really rich and it goes down very smooth though it smells very american genuine beerish for me. I liked the foamy head it produced and the chocolat almost spicy taste tones it has in addition to a generic toffee flavor. This rich, fruity ale has won me over. Apparently you can even get in from Lidl in the UK. The amber color is pleasing my eye and - as a label collector - I really liked the fancy St. George against the dragon label. I really like the aftertaste and the aroma that stays in ones nose. A quick net research showed that the general public gave it rather mediocre reviews... an opinion I can't share.

Ohimennen: siivoussiideri Thatcher's Old Rascal

Taloutemme eräälle naarakselle iski rymsteeraushinku, ja siivouskiukkua loiventamaan tarvittiin tyylikkääseen etikettiin kääritty, markettiluokassaan melkoisen maukas (joskin makea) brittisiideri.

Tuoksultaan toki omenainen, maultaan samoin. Kieli puutuu tanniinista (?) hieman. Rakenne tuntuisi kaipaavan hieman lisää alkoholia; tämäkin maitokauppasiideri olisi parempaa hardina.

Vallan mainiota; ostaisin/tulen ostamaan uudestaankin - tosin ostotoimenpiteen sattuessa anniskeluliikkeeseen, vaihdan tämän johonkin hardimpaan Thatcher'sin tuotteeseen.

Laitilan Kievari Portteri

Tämä on oikein maukasta mämmiä. Juuri sellaista hapanta ja katkeraa, kuten pääsiäisenä pitääkin. Vaikka tässä on prosentteja jonkin verran yli kioskioluen, ne eivät juuri maistu kaiken ihanuuden alta. Tämä portteri on lisäksi niin tummaa, ettei kirkas iltapäivän aurinko näy tuopin läpi lainkaan. Vaahtoakin oli, mutta se pakeni kun tuoppiin katsoi vihaisesti.

Laadukkaasta mämmistä erottuu paahtunut kahvi ja ehkä laktrisi; suussa tuntuu humala. Jälkimaku ei ole vetinen kuten useissa muissa kotimaisissa porttereissa.

Näitä syksyn viimeisiä aurinkoisia päiviä katsellessa tällainen olut toimii oikein hyvin jälkiruokajuomana. Toinenkin pullo maistuisi erinomaisesti, vaikka yleensä en useampaa tummaa olutta juokkaan peräkkäin. Tänään tästä puuttuu ainoastaan sikari.

Ei tämä parhaita porttereita ole, mutta edulliseen hintaansa nähden tämä olut kyllä yllättää positiivisesti.

1st post, eli Kaksi Germaania

Tähän on tultu. Tästä se alkaa, toivottavasti ei myös lopu: legitiimi syy maistella erilaisia ja mitä parhaimpia makuja sieltä sun täältä, useimmiten perin epäterveellisellä sisällysluettelolla tai ainakin ravinnesisällöllä varustettuna.

Blogin sisällöntuottajat eivät vielä ole valinneet standardiformaattia soppa-arvosteluun, joten sitä odotellessa kaikkien yhden lukijamme tulee tyytyä kiertoilmauksiin, sinne-tännepäinsyyksiin, Harrison-Stetsonin menetelmään sekä osittain puhtaaseen höpöhöpöön. Aistihavainnot kuitenkin pyritään ilmaisemaan sponsoreista riippumattomina, absoluuttisen subjektiivisina ja rehellisinä.

Ihkaensimmäisen hörsittävän setin ylöskirjaamisen saa kunniakseen juureva germaanikaksikko Schlappeseppel & Duckstein, jotka toimitti maisteltavaksi juureva germaanivahvistuksemme suoraan juurevasta Germaniasta!

Schlappeseppel Kellerbier (pullo, 0,5 l)

on allekirjoittaneen maistamana ensimmäinen lajityyppinsä edustaja (joskaan asiasta ei ole täyttä varmuutta).

Visuaalis-spatiaalinen ensivaikutelma oli vehnäolutmainen aluksi suuren vaahtokukan takia, ja värikin oli mallia "samea keltaoranssi hiivahiutaleilla". Maku kuitenkin yllätti, sillä tukevasta banaanihiivaisuudesta ja kirpakasta vehnäisyydestä ei ollut tietoakaan; ensimmäiseksi mieleen juolahtivat adjektiivit "laadukas", "maltainen", sekä luonnehdinta "helposti juotava".

Vertailukohtaa muihin kaltaisiinsa ei ole, mutta suoraan sanoen ja eittämättä hörsisin tätä toistekin. Bittereissä ja (i)pa-oluissa riepoteltu kitalakeni olisi ehkä toivonut enemmän humalaa, mutta tuhti kukkaismaku ei - rehellisyyden nimissä - tähän oluttyyppiin kyllä sopisi.

Olut on pastöroimaton.

Duckstein (pullo, 0,5 l)
oli toinen tuliaisista. Paikallisesti ilmeisesti kohtalaisen arvostettu "artesaaniolut", joka tuli numeroidun sinettietiketin keralla. Punertavaa, laadukkaan ja tuhdin makuista, kaiketi altbieriksi luokiteltavaa oltta, joka ei jättänyt hirveästi toivomisen varaa. Paitsi ehkä toista pulloa. Ehkä turhan maltainen ja makea verrattuna humalointiin, mutta eriäväkin mielipide aiheesta kuultiin.

Tätä lätinää kirjoittaessani tulin myös maistelleeksi
Loïc Raisonin pikkupullo-4-packeissa kaupattavan kuivan omenasiiderin, joka ei varsinaisesti yllättänyt fransmannien tapaan tanniinisella ensipuraisullaan, mutta vetinen jälkimaku nolotti hieman.

Hyvää silti, ja sentään oikealta maistuvaa siideriä.
